Implementing the New Florida Standards

The New Sunshine State Standards reflect research and recommendations from a diverse group of researchers including educators, politicians, research groups and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). NCTM described in both their Principles and Standards for School Mathematics and Curriculum Focal Points for Kindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics: A Quest for Coherence an approach to curriculum development that focuses on areas of emphasis within each grade from pre-kindergarten through grade 8. These documents were written in response to the lack of clear, consistent priorities and focus in the mathematics curriculum across the United States.

In this one to three day hands-on workshop, Big Ideas Learning will work with teachers on how to implement the new Florida Standards and a curriculum that is narrower and deeper through areas of emphasis vital to effective math instruction. We will help teachers learn to become facilitators as they allow students to struggle with and master concepts. Teachers will leave the workshop armed with strategies and methods for taking topics deeper, making connections to prior knowledge, and creating more robust learning environments.
